On the 13th of August, I would sign up for the Medium Partner Program. I had heard about the Medium Partner Program but had been unable to join because payouts for the Medium Partner Program are made through Stripe. Sadly, Nigeria is not on the list of countries supported by Stripe.

Reading this article where the author explained how to sign up from Nigeria would guide me through the steps needed to join the Medium Partner Program from Nigeria.

If you are a writer based in Nigeria, this article will explain how you can benefit from the Medium Partner Program. It is one of the way to make money online in Nigeria.

On the 28th of August, I would submit my first article to a publication and the rest would be history.

5 Ways to Make Money During the Coronavirus Lockdown in Nigeria

On Sunday the 29th of March, after months of being silent, the Nigerian President finally addressed the nation. Starting from 11 pm yesterday, there will be a ban on movement in Lagos from 11 pm. The ban will last for the next 2 weeks.

This post will look at 5 ways to make money during the lockdown in Nigeria. Due to the restriction on movement, these methods have to of necessity be methods of making money online.

The criteria for the selection of these methods are based on my personal belief that they can be set up within the period of the lockdown.

So if today, you started work on any of the 5 methods, by the end of the lockdown, you should have made money online even if you haven’t done so before.

Virtual Classes

If you have a skill, the easiest way to monetize that skill right now is to offer one on one classes with your students.

This will involve agreeing on a time with your students and meeting up with them at that time.

To avoid them missing classes, you as a teacher must define your method of communication with your students beforehand and send reminders before the classes start.

Technology: WhatsApp Video, Zoom.

Online Freelancing

If you have a skill, you can make money in this period by working online as a freelancer.

There a number of skills in demand. The key here is to look for the skill or talent that you are most passionate about start with that.

Passion cannot be overlooked here because you will be competing with people from all over the world.

Freelancing Marketplaces: Fiverr, Upwork.

Write and Publish an eBook

You can write an publish an eBook for sale in 2 weeks if you would cut out all distractions and focus.

It would be hard because writing is hard but at the end of the period, you would have a book to your name.

Once you finish writing, you can sell the books in an online marketplace.

Online Marketplaces: Amazon, Okadabooks.

Create and Sell Online Courses

In this case, you are automating your virtual classes to operate without your presence.

Online courses consist mainly of videos so you would have to find a means to create them.

If you have a very good smartphone camera, that could suffice if you wanted to show your face. If you decide not to, you could use screencasting software to record your screen as you work through your content.

Technology for Video Production: Open Broadcast Software, Movavi.

Sell Graphics Design

This story should inspire you on what is possible with the creation of digital designs.

If you can design items that people can print at home, you can make this happen for you.

Technology for Selling: Etsy, Shopify.

This period of lockdown will be a time unprecedented in the history of our country.

Do make the most of it by assessing where you are and realigning yourself to meet your goals.

Wage Slavery

When you live in the poorest nation in the world, wage slavery is a reality.

You earn peanuts and to add insult to injury, you might be owed your salary for months on end.

That was my life once upon a time before I took the plunge to make money online.

The truth is that I am still figuring this out. I made some money this month through writing so I know that it works. The challenge is to scale the amount of income made.

Yesterday, I discovered that I couldn’t make money using affiliate marketing as this site didn’t have enough traffic.

It is only something you can learn from experience. In Nigeria, we say that a person who used mouth to learn driving won’t get into an accident.

N50,000 is $138 by the current exchange rate. How much can that get you?

That is the reality of living in Nigeria at the moment. There is no end in sight to the suffering.

Were I a candidate who knew Microsoft Excel, I would tempt my fate on Fiverr or Upwork.

Freelancing online is way better than frustrating yourself in traffic especially if you live in Lagos.

Make Money Online

The part key to making money online is to be able to receive your money in your local currency.

If you live in a country like Nigeria, your options in getting paid online are limited because of the reputation of the “Nigerian Prince”.

So you can forget about PayPal although you can use it to send money outside the country, you cannot receive money in Nigeria using PayPal.

An alternative you can consider for receiving payments online is Payoneer.

What is Payoneer?

Payoneer is a global payment platform that empowers businesses, online sellers and freelancers to pay and get paid globally as easily as they do locally.

The first roadblock I faced as a writer when I wanted to start selling books on Amazon was the means for receiving my money in Nigeria.

My search for alternatives would lead me to Payoneer. I would link my Amazon account to my Payoneer by Electronic Fund Transfer and every month, I see the sales from my books on Amazon reflected in my Payoneer account.

Where Can You Use Payoneer in Nigeria?

The most popular use-case for Payoneer in Nigeria is on freelance websites. The trend of working from home is slowly growing in Nigeria.

Thanks to Payoneer, freelancers can cash out their earnings by sending them to a local bank.

My own use case for selling on Amazon is more of an outlier. However, the integration of the two services helps me collect my earnings in Naira.

The options for making money online in Nigeria have grown in the last decade.

This article has looked at how to receive payments in Nigeria with Payoneer.
